The name of the area Soho is believed to be derived from a hunting cry. James Scott, Duke of Monmouth is known to have used the word as a rallying call for his troops during the Battle of Sedgemoor. The area was largely a grazing farmland until Henry VIII took it for the Palace of Whitehall as a royal park.
